Remembering Mr. Cunningham

Written by Staff Writer Prisha Puntambekar

Steve Cunningham’s tragic passing on February 9 marked a somber day for MC and its hard-working robotics program. Mr. Cunningham worked with the world of mechanical engineering and chose to share his knowledge with MC students. Husband of Engineering and Robotics teacher Karen Wytman, he used his work and words to gently touch the lives of many sundevils.

Outside of his own work, Mr. Cunningham personally arranged field trips for the robotics students and his company sponsored the robotics program. Mr. Cunningham helped in the classroom by discussing engineering with pupils.

Mr. Cunningham’s steadfast efforts served MC well, as the school won the Connect Award and Control Award for the 2019 Rover Ruckus Competition. The team also won the Motivate Award and Connect Award for the 2020 Skystone Competition.

Mr. Cunningham was known for his hard-working attitude towards his passions, which included marathons, surfing, and environmental work.

Despite his unfortunate passing in early February, many members of the MC family continue to honor Mr. Cunningham. In his name, MC students are highly encouraged to donate to Team Sierra or the Surfrider Foundation.  Both organizations support the environment-related initiatives Mr. Cunningham pursued in his lifetime.
