Demi Lovato’s new song ‘Commander in Chief’

Singer Demi Lovato revealed her political stance in her new song “Commander in Chief”. The song includes powerful lyrics demanding for change after the traumatic events that occurred this year.

Lovato released the music video with people of varying race, age, and background to show how President Trump’s lack of response to several issues such as Covid-19, racial injustice, and natural disasters has affected many different people.

Lovato faced criticism for displaying her political views but did not care about the repercussions.

“I literally don’t care if this ruins my career. This isn’t about that. My career isn’t about that. I made a piece of art that stands for something I believe in. And I’m putting it out even at the risk of losing fans. I’ll take integrity in my work over sales any day,” she said.

The Lincoln Project, an anti-Trump political action commitee composed of former Republicans joined Lovato by  creating their own music video with her new song. The music video shows clips of the Black Lives Matter protests where people raised their hands demanding justice for George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. It also showcased elders in nursing homes unable to see their loved ones  because of the president’s mismanagement over the pandemic. The video ends with clips of people voting and making a change in their country for the better.

Lovato’s song made its first debut when she performed it at the Billboard Music Awards. The word “VOTE” was broadcasted on the wall behind her. Other celebrities joined her in spreading the message to vote. Singers Billie Eilish and Lizzo incorporated their opinions into their winning speeches to spread awareness to their viewers.

Lovato uses her platform to show that people can make a change when they come together. Lovato wrote her last message before the election. “I’m calling on all of you, please join me in voting in this year’s election,” she said. Listeners certainly responded to her message as this year was the highest voter turnout in recent history.
