Cross Country girls go Indie Jammin

Taking a well deserved break from a grueling season, the girls of Cross Country decided to participate in channel 94.9’s annual Indie Fest. The festival took place in early September at the Oceanside pier. In addition to enjoying the music, the team also got to meet several bands.

“We all met Sir Sly, Portugal the Man, and Magic Giant,” senior Samantha Breede said, “But our other teammates got to meet the Dreamers, Misterwives, and The Wrecks.”

While most concerts require special VIP passes to meet the musicians, the girls were able to with General Admission.

“Most of the time it was a quick ‘Hey I’m a fan, you guys are amazing’ […] but Sophie Jones and I got to actually have a conversation with the band Magic Giant,” Bredee said.

Magic Giant had set up a booth for their eco-friendly shirts. The band pledged to plant a tree for every shirt sold. Bredee and Jones both stopped by and talked with the members.

Although the teammates had different favorite performances, most of the girls agreed the band Sir Sly was their favorite.

“Sir Sly was our favorite on behalf of all of us,” Bredee said, “They had one of the best vocals…[and] we knew most of their songs. They had a dark, kind of mysterious vibe to their songs which made the sound really unique and we were really into it.”

The runners made several memories that night but overall their favorite was spending time together as a team.

“The best part of the night was eating $3  tacos on the dirty asphalt with my team,” senior Katie Hawley said, “We run a lot but eat more than you could ever imagine.”
