Sherlock Season 4: Mary’s a snake and John is struggling, what’s new?

SPOILER ALERT

To start the new year off right, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman came back as your favorite crime-fighting duo: Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. The first episode of the new season premiered on Jan. 1st, with John’s bitterness toward Sherlock still present from when we left off.

Ever since Sherlock faked his death, John has been understandably bitter towards him. But in the latest episode, their relationship seems even

more strained, as Sherlock is the last person John would like to be talking to. While John and Sherlock’s relationship is rocky, John and Mary are certainly getting closer  during Mary’s pregnancy and after little Rosie is born. Or so we think, until the viewers get a glimpse of John’s suspicious messages to the pretty woman on the bus.

Secrets, secrets, and more secrets. While John is enjoying his messaging affair, Mary is hiding her past. Yes, again. This episode really dug deep into her past to find the secret organization she used to be a part of. The members were betrayed and sent into a trap by a woman whom they originally believed was Mary, but is revealed to be someone nobody expected. The season premiere ended with a heartbreaking death, one that may take the fanbase quite a while to recover from–not because of who it was, but because of how they died. After this very eventful episode, fans are left to wonder, “What else could possibly happen? How could you hurt us any more?”

It seems that writer and producer Steven Moffat has a few more tricks up his sleeve and is planning something big.

“Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street, and it always feels like coming home. Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson and terror and tragedy are looming. This is the story we’ve been telling from the beginning and it’s about to reach its climax,” Moffat told PBS Masterpiece regarding the mystery of season four.

As this episode came to a close, the last words spoken left watchers anxiously awaiting the next episode.

“I’m giving you a case, Sherlock,” Mary said. “Might be the hardest case of your career. Save John Watson. Save him, Sherlock. Save him.”
