MC’s field hockey girls dominated their game against Otay Ranch on Wednesday, beginning the season with a strong 5-0 win.

“We surprised ourselves because our passing was so on point and we worked really well together… it was like the perfect game,” senior and team co-captain Jenna Sheppard said.

MC’s girls played offensively throughout the game starting the first half with a 1-0 lead and then drastically increased their lead during the second half, ensuring their chances of victory.

“At halftime, the score was only 1-0 and then in the second half we ended up scoring four times,” senior and team co-captain Christine Crasto said, “In my four years of playing I’ve never seen our passing look like it did during that game.”

The goals were scored by Eden Viallovas (11), Andrea Liptak (11), and co-captain Emma Salminen (12), who scored twice.

Though the team didn’t receive as many athletes at summer tryouts as expected, since school has started, the team has attracted the attention of a few more girls. With their new additions and growing technique, the team’s captains are looking forward to a strong season filled with new skills and high expectations.

“It’s a good feeling winning with such a strong team, especially because it’s my senior year, and we’re all really motivated to get a CIF banner,” Salminen said.

The team’s next game is an away match against Bonita Vista this Thursday, Sept.1.

“I’m pretty excited for it and we have a good chance at winning… and it’s on turf!” said Salminen said with a laugh.
