The school year is in full swing, and with it comes every sports fan’s favorite part of Fall. It’s time to grab your friends, throw on your favorite red shirt, and jump in the Red Sea because Football Fridays are back, and the Sundevils are off to a strong start.

In their first season game against Otay Ranch the team clinched a shutout, with a final score of 34-0.

All of the team’s hard work during preseason showed, as plays ran smoothly and teammates cooperated with each other.

“It went really [well] actually. Everything was clicking and it was a really good game,” senior quarterback Dylan Hunt said. “It was really cool to show out the first game, because nobody really knew if I could play or not, so I just gotta keep that going, and hopefully I do.”

The game started off with an exciting passing play for the Sundevils that set the tone for the next three quarters.

“Going into the game our coach always tells us the first play, and I kind of just told Dylan to trust me,” senior receiver cornerback TJ Sullivan said. “I was like ‘I’m gonna go get it’, and sure enough I beat the corner and we just connected.”

Other pivotal moments of the game included numerous touchdowns, accurate field goals, among other show stopping plays.

“Our cornerback stepped in front of the ball at the one yard line and he took it back for 99 yards,” Sullivan said. “Unfortunately, he got called back because we had an illegal block. It was those [kinds of] turnovers that made our lead so dramatic.”

Having a team composed of mostly juniors has not hindered the Sundevils’ chances at success.

“It’s an experience when you’re a senior and you have those younger guys that don’t really know too much about varsity yet,” Sullivan said. “It’s a pleasure to teach them.”

The team feels completely confident in their ability to win against hometown rivals such as Westview and Rancho Bernardo.

“We just have to focus and put in work,” Hunt said. “It’s pretty much that simple. We just need to work harder than the other team to win.”

The football team’s next game is Friday, Sept. 2nd against La Costa Canyon.

“We look forward to every team every week,” Sullivan said. “We prepare by taking practice seriously, and playing to the best of our ability to make each other better, because we know it’s going to be like that in the game. We focus on going 1 and 0 each week, so right now we’re focusing on LCC, and we won’t focus on anyone else until Friday night when the game is over.”
