“What season is it?” All over the MC campus, Instagram, and Twitter this inquiry is being shouted by MC athletes. Whether spring is viewed as baseball, track, swim, dive, tennis, or lax season, the MC girl’s lax team is determined to make it their own.

Although the team had a rough start to the season, with a record of 1-4, spirits are high after a recent victory of 8-7 against Santa Fe Christian.

“The other team was too aggressive. We were just a little more peaceful, together, and in sync. We destroyed them,” senior Alexis Cañedo said.

The team maintained the intensity of the game, while remaining civil and working as a unit.

“We actually played as a team and were connected,” senior Taylor Lewis said. “We made good transitions throughout the field. When they started playing dirty, we came back harder while staying composed.”

Even when other teams decide to illegally slash in the direction of someone’s head  play dirty, the MC girl’s lax team takes the high road by continuing to play by the rules of the Sundevil Way.

“They were pressuring us a lot,” Cañedo said. “We knew that we had to communicate with one another. We pressured them right back, which made them mad, and then we would get the ball back [once they were called for fouls].”

Although the team had a successful game there are still major  aspects they can improve on.

“We could improve on our transitions in the middle of the field and our crashes, which is when a girl is driving to goal and everyone [on defense] goes to them,” Cañedo said. “All we have to do is yell that a girl is coming down, so that everyone can [react quickly].”

The team was determined to win against long time rivals Westview, and make the most of the seniors’ last season. Although they suffered a difficult loss of 11-2, this score does not truly indicate the team’s best game of defense they’ve played to date.

“I [was] most excited for the Westview game this season with my best friend Jenna, because I won’t be here next year,” Lewis said.

MC girls’ lacrosse plans to step up their game as the season progresses and show the students of MC that lacrosse is the best sport around. There’s nothing that these girls would rather being doing. After all, “It’s Lax Season Baby!”
