MC track season comes to an end

As the track season comes to a close, senior members look both back and ahead. They reflect on the season and look at where track will take them for the rest of the season and for years to come.

“This season has been going really well,” senior Derek Morton said. “It’s been by far the best season that I have ever had. I have been running personal bests and running faster than I ever had before. I just keep learning and doing better.”

Even though the season has been going well, the team is still working hard and trying to improve.

“We are kind of just now getting into the hard workouts from here on out because we are going into leagues next week,” S=senior Marcus Montalvo said.

If a sun devil does well in leagues they are able to keep racing and compete at higher levels.

“We go leagues, prelims, CIF finals, and then if you are really ‘beast’ you go to state.” Montalvo said. “We are in that championship season now so we are gearing up, getting ready to focus on our events going forward.”

As there time on MC’s track team comes to a close, both Montalvo and Morton are looking forward to continuing track next year together.

“I’m going [to college] with two people, Marcus Montalvo and Elyssa Schall,” Morton said. “We are all going to Chico State together.”

They are both looking forward to school and track next year up in northern California.

“I’m just really excited to run,” Montalvo said. “They have a really good program and I’m excited to be a part of it and to see myself get better and see the other guys up there and get to run with them. It’s going to be a blast.”

Chico State accepted all three MC students because of their ability in both track and school in general.

“The coach contacted me early in the year and I still didn’t know where I wanted to go to school so I talked to him for a little bit,” said Morton. “As I learned more about the school I got more interested in it and I started showing interest in it to him and letting him know that it was one of my top schools. I narrowed it down to two schools and I just knew that that is the place that I wanted to be.”

Track has helped these students get into college, but has also helped them generally in life. It has been a major part of their high school experience and has impacted their lives in a positive way.

“Distance running has helped me in life in general.” Montalvo said. “It’s given me a lot of motivation and drive to just be successful.”
