Girls basketball starts their season with triumph

As winter season sports are beginning at MC, the girls’ basketball team has started it off with a bang.

“This season is going great so far,” junior Ali Englehardt said. “Our team is 5-0 right now and we have already beaten some top ranked teams.”

The team is adjusting to the different positions and the new players that have been introduced to the team, including senior Mercedes Humphrey, who transferred from Mira Mesa high school.

“MC’s team is different in the way that the team is closer as a whole, like a family,” Humphrey said. “Also at Mira Mesa there were no buses, and the bus rides cultivate time for our team to just be friends outside of basketball.”

Returning players are hoping to adjust to the differences on the team compared to last years.

“This year’s team is different from last years’ because a lot of people changed roles on the team and we lost two amazing seniors,” Englehardt said. “But we are still all sisters to each other and I cannot wait to see where this season takes us.”

The girls all want to have a great season and make it to CIFs.

“The team’s goal is to work hard and do the best we can to bring home a CIF banner,” junior Annelise Morgan said.

The girls not only have a team goal they wish to accomplish, but their own personal goal as well.

“My personal goal for this year is to improve from last year and also be a good team captain,” Englehardt said. “I also want our team to do a lot of team bonding activities.”

The team just hopes for an amazing season.

“Our team is going to work on achieving our goal by playing strong and working together, and hopefully making a ton a baskets,” sophomore Casey McWilliam said.

On Saturday, Dec. 14, the team will play in a championship game against Serra high school at 5 o’clock, and they are planning on making it yet another win.
