The week of April 18-22, MC’s Environmental Club brought a new spirit week to the campus in an attempt to celebrate Earth Day.
MC senior and club vice president Elisa Serrano described the club’s motivation behind the spirit week.
“It was basically a way to get people more aware of the environment. Not a lot of people are really in Environmental Projects Club, so it was kind of a way for us to reach out and try to gain more support for what we stand for,” Serrano said.
The week began with the club encouraging students to remain environmentally conscious starting with Meatless Monday, Transportation Tuesday, Water Wednesday, Don’t Throw Out Thursday and finally ending with Earth Day on Friday
To encourage physical activity, the club purchased toys like jump ropes and balls and bats for students to play with. The activity day on Friday brought out a larger crowd than most club members expected, making it a huge success.
“It was surprising because we didn’t really expect that much to happen. We thought we were going to have to work to get people out there, but once people saw we were having fun out there, a lot of them joined in,” Serrano said
The importance of this club and the activity week is mainly to bring awareness, according to Serrano.
“A lot of people aren’t really aware of the impact we make on our environment and especially high schoolers remain a little aloof to it.”
Environmental club plans on making their Earth Day celebrations and awareness days an annual event.
