A night of dancing, singing, play performances, and food, all centered on the complex Filipino culture. On May 8, MC’s performing arts center hosted a group of over 100 people from all over the school district.

“PCN or Filipino Culture Night is a night where we showcase our talents to the Filipino community,” senior Lou Ryan Alarcon said. “It’s about educating students about the Filipino culture.”

Alarcon is the president of Fil-Am, the club that runs PCN. Their club coordinates with other schools to run different Filipino conferences around the school district.

“Fil-Am is a club that goes on in various schools all around the district,” junior Jada Quidachay said. “Both Rancho Bernardo and Westview participate in PCN. The clubs of all three schools exchange ideas and work together.”

At  PCN, there were various activities and performances from students at our school.

“We hosted a play, casted and directed by our PCN commissioners and officers,” Alarcon said. “The play focused on the main aspects of Filipino culture, such as family and individuality. There was also Filipino dancing and singing, all accompanied by traditional food.”

The Fil-Am Club here at MC helps to integrate two completely separate cultures together.

“Both the Fil-Am club and PCN is all about mixing the Filipino culture with American culture,” Quidachay said. “It helps educate kids about Filipino heritage and lifestyle, because that is a special thing to have, and to lose that connection would be terrible.”

The Filipino Culture Night was held as an attempt  to fund raise money.

“We put on the show to raise money for the club. This was our 14th annual PCN,” Quidachay said.

The club is a close knit group, and their close relations are shown in their “Fil-amily”.

“We share interests in food, family, and culture. There is a great emphasis on family in the Filipino culture, and so that’s why we sometimes call ourselves the Fil-amily.” Alarcon said.

This family will continue to meet Mondays in E7, and invites everybody to come join the club.

“Its a really fun club, and anyone can join, so come visit sometime, and you’ll learn a lot!” Quidachay said.
