Underground Artists

By definition, art is “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination”.  It is most often linked to art in a visual form such as a painting, but can refer to writing, music, or even filmmaking.

Among the hundreds of students present at Mt. Carmel, there is a niche of “underground artists”.  These artists range from those who specialize in drawing and painting, to musicians who compose and perform music in their spare time.

Though these students may not be widely known or professionally recognized, art continues to play a large role in their lives.

“I have been involved [in art] since first grade, and now I’m in eleventh.  So [that makes] ten years,” Lee said.

Lee enjoys portraying stories through her art and creating her own original artwork.

“I usually use pens and I just draw in my sketchbook.  I create characters,” Lee said.  “It’s very pleasing for me and I like creating stories and since I’m not very strong as a writer, I like drawing them out instead.”

Using online art communities such as deviantART or even Tumblr to promote her art, Lee is more widely known among her internet fans, where she goes by her account name, “mangosgonewild”.

Another artist who attends MCHS is Sophomore Brady Kerr, a musician who plays lead guitar in a rock band.

“We’re called ‘Open For Business’ and we formed in 2010,” Kerr said.  “We just got together with a group of friends and decided to make a band.”

As far as albums are concerned, Kerr’s band hasn’t completed any so far.

“We’ve recorded a few songs but we don’t have any albums,” said Kerr.

However, Kerr has played in a variety of different places throughout San Diego and the band has even been paid for their performances.

“We’ve played at the House of Blues twice and at the Del Mar Fair.”

When asked about the future of the band and whether he plans on continuing to play, Kerr said the band doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
