The Vampire Diaries was one of the most iconic shows of the last decade. After its first season airing in 2009 and its final eighth season premiering in 2017, many fans would agree that the show had a great run and was a big hit. Many were saddened by the show’s finale as they watched the beloved Salvatore brother’s and doppelgangers go, but because the show regained lots of popularity during quarantine through Netflix, as of October 2020 the series has been renewed for a ninth season and many fans have mixed reactions.

Since the announcement of the renewed season many fans have been wondering if the three core characters: Elena Gilbert, Damon Salvatore, and Stefan Salvatore portrayed by Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder, and Paul Wesley will make a return to the show.

According to Pop Culture: “While the lead on Ian Somerhalder has declined to reprise his role as Damon Salvatore, the chances on season nine stand on the slim rope. In short, Nina Dobrev as Elena Gilbert, Paul Wesley as Stefan Salvatore, Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore return for season nine, only then will the project stand a chance for viewership.”

Because many think the shows love triangle might not return to set for season nine, many fans are disappointed, especially to see that Damon Salvatore’s bad boy demeanor and humor is not being reprised.

Due to the writers announcing a new season of the show three years after its finale, many fans are also in speculation of whether the season is really happening and when the official release date is.

“Many rumors are fuelling fan’s expectations for The Vampire Diaries Season 9. One such is the ninth season will be released in March 2021 on The CW. Thereby the rumor claimed that Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec would direct the ninth season,” Pop Culture stated.

Because the writers of The Vampire Diaries are still working on season three of the spinoff show, “Legacies” and due to the repercussions of quarantining, the initial release date in 2021 might be pushed back.

There is much speculation and questions in regards to how the writers will be able to bring the storyline back to life after the eighth season’s final episode “I Was Feeling Epic” which essentially closed out the series.

Overall, the talk of a ninth season for the much loved supernatural vampire series has definitely turned heads and caused hope in fans across the globe. Only time will tell if the writers can pull through and give the show a great final season, again.
