Girls’ Varsity Volleyball

The start of the new school year signifies the beginning of the fall sports season. This year, the MC girls’ varsity volleyball team is comprised of 14 people, including 6 seniors and 3 freshmen. Senior Jennifer Low believes this new structure will impact the team.

“I’m very optimistic and it seems like we’re going to have a good season this year,” Lowe said. “There are a lot of new people on the team and some returners too. The freshman will bring something new to the team, and one of the [seniors] is a transfer student from Mira Mesa. The seniors are the core of the team and we’ve all known each other for the last four years.”

Junior Leanne Gehrke is looking forward to her third year on the team.

“I’m really excited and I think we’re going to have a fun time,” Gehrke said. “I’m looking forward to the competition and just being with all the girls on the team. I feel like we’re going to be better than last year, because this years’ team has a better connection, so that connection will help us play and work better as a team.”

The team had a summer camp before try-outs in order to get prepared for the season.

“I did camps and I played a little bit of beach volleyball, so that was fun,” Gehrke said.

Now, in the beginning of the year, goals have been set for the season.

“My goal is to be close as a team, to work hard every day at the practices and at the games, and improve throughout the season so we can keep getting better,” Low said.  “I think our team has a lot of heart so we can push through anything.”

For Low and the other seniors, this volleyball season is their last one.

“I’m not looking forward to [the end of the season and] not playing volleyball anymore since it’s my senior year and it’s the last year I’ll be playing in high school,” Lowe said. “It’s ending in a way.

In preparation for the up-coming games and scrimmages, the volleyball team has been practicing.

“We’re doing really well at practices, and we’re farther ahead this season than last season,” Gehrke said.  “We have a scrimmage next Thursday on September 5. We’re getting there and I think we’re going to be good.”
