Coach Malta’s Varsity Volleyball Team

IMG_9847With over 28 years of experience, six CIF titles, coaching boys’ volleyball is nothing new to varsity coach Patsy Malta.

Boy’s volleyball is one of the couple sports with a freshman, JV, and varsity team. Even with three teams, around 20 cuts had to be made this year according to Malta.

This year is no different as Malta aims to improve the skill and friendships of the players, and make it to playoffs in the process.

“[Our goals are] to make playoffs, to do well in league, and to bond as a team,” Malta said.

Although another CIF title would be great, Malta isn’t too focused on winning one. She feels that this year’s team is a bit young and inexperienced. However the players are more athletic than last season’s players according to Malta.  Malta expects the younger players to step up and fill their roles.

“The two sophomores, Johnny Mallak, and Mikey Keegan are going to be key players. Mikey Keegan has a big role to fill because he’s going to be setting and he’s only played one year. Johnny Mallak looks pretty good. New kid KC is gonna be a pretty good player and he’s only a sophomore. I think the young ones are the ones who are going to have to step up and play,”Malta explains.

Malta really has a passion for the sport of volleyball. She loves that it’s a team sport and the camaraderies that you form. She has many friends involved in volleyball and likes that it’s a unique sport. Malta obviously has a love for volleyball, and now coaches to pass on her passion.
