Presidential Medal of Freedom: The best friendship necklace

As President Barack Obama’s final term came to an end, he threw his Vice President Joe Biden a surprise party.

According to CNN, Biden thought he was going to toast the senior staff with his wife Jill Biden and Michelle Obama. What he wasn’t expecting was Obama to award him with the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Before presenting Biden with the award, Obama painted Biden and his family in a wonderful light, saying Biden was “as good a man as God ever created”, and went on to call his own family “honorary Bidens”.

“For your faith in your fellow Americans, for your love of country and for your lifetime of service that will endure through the generations, I’d like to ask the military aide to join us on stage,” Obama said. “For my final time as President, I am pleased to award our nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.”

Upon hearing this, Biden shed a few tears before accepting the award, claiming he did not deserve it.

“This honor is not only well beyond what I deserve, but it’s a reflection of the extent and generosity of your spirit,” Biden said. “I don’t deserve this but I know it came from the President’s heart.”

From overseeing a $787 billion economic stimulus package, running a middle-class task force, to reviving an arms reduction treaty with Russia, Biden has made many achievements and Obama recognized this by awarding him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

“To know Joe Biden is to know love without pretense, service without self-regard, and to live life fully,” Obama said.
