March 25, 2015. This day will forever be held in scorn and hatred by millions around the world. For on this very day, Zayn Malik of the prominent, widely known band One Direction announced that his years of singing alongside the band were over. Now, “Directioners” as they are called, are experiencing a throng of emotions as they mourn the departure of Malik.
The news was broken through a post on the One Direction Facebook page stating thus:
“My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I’d like to apologise to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”
While Malik has been in the news recently, leaving the band in the middle of their tour due to “stress,”, no one expected it to culminate incompletely vacating his position as the high-note singing heartthrob.
This arbitrary announcement is following unwanted publicity that Malik had recently cheated on his fiancee, Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards whilst the boys were in Thailand.
However, Malik quitting the band had apparently been inexorable. Reports have been made that Simon Cowell, the band’s boss, and his company Syco Records received word that Malik was contemplating leaving back in January.
The other members’ reactions have been supportive and mournful. At a show, Liam Payne introduced the four of them by their first names, stating that they weren’t One Direction without Zayn. On March 26, at a show in Jakarta, Indonesia, Harry Styles was seen crying on stage over Malik’s absence and being consoled by Liam Payne.
In the midst of the media coverage, it was announced that the four remaining members of the band, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan, would continue as a four-person band. They also announced that they will be releasing an album without Malik.
As the tweets and Facebook posts multiply, many fans are trying to comfort one another, reminding people that this is not the first time a band member has left, and it sure will not be the last. However, the tears from girls around the world are prominent as society begins the adjustment period to what, in a sense, is becoming “two directions.”
