Double the trouble: movie sequels appear years later

Successful movie franchises like Twilight and Harry Potter have been pumping out sequels every year or so, raking in millions at the box office with each installment.
However, some franchises take more time off before continuing their series. Toy Story 3 was released 11 years after Toy Story 2, hooking a whole new generation of kids, and bringing back the older fans from when the movies were first released.
While these several year long hiatuses between movies can pull in a lot of hype when the sequel comes out, there may be a good amount of people who don’t even remember the first movie anymore. For example, Shrek Forever After was a major flop as the series’ fourth installment, bringing in 200 million dollars less than the second movie.
Now, successful movies like Zoolander from 2001 and Dumb and Dumber from 1994 are being revived for sequels a decade after their release.
While Zoolander 2 has not set an official release date, old fans are already anxiously waiting for their old favorite to make a comeback on the big screen. Will Ferrell and Justin Theroux are also reported to join Ben Stiller for the sequel.
In the nearer future, however, Dumb and Dumber To (punny title and all) will be attracting the millions of viewers from the original. Starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as the iconic bowl-cut Lloyd and goofy Harry, this sequel promises just as many laughs as the first one from 1994.
Dumb and Dumber To takes place 20 years after the first one, and includes another cross-country road trip- this time to find Harry’s daughter in hopes of receiving a kidney from her.
Another sequel gathering a lot of public attention is the Finding Nemo sequel, Finding Dory. It will be released in 2016, so there are only rumors as of now regarding the plot, but there are theories that the storyline will involve Dory finding her family and past life. Disney often dominates the box office with their worldwide franchises, like they did with Toy Story 3, so people anticipate a successful continuation even 10 years after Finding Nemo from 2004.
With all the excitement for movie sequels, we can only hope that they will live up to their predecessors’ success.
